After almost two
years of delays, postponements, changes to the original plans, bad weather etc.
The Old Bowling Green on Sandal Street was officially opened in April 2001 and
a lovely new play park has been created by Groundwork Manchester.
The opening ceremony (Cutting the Ribbon) was performed by Mr. Alf Almond, the gentleman who holds the Cup from the last Bowling Tournament (1973), played with the bowling club who were based at the Bowling Green.
Alf told local residents
This Bowling Green was very popular when I was young, it was one of the
few green spaces in Miles Platting and locals would come and try their hand
at bowling or simply come to watch others play. It was very well looked after
too, there were two greenkeepers that I remember who kept the greens immaculate.
People didnt have much money in those days, so when they had an area like
this park they appreciated it and helped to keep it clean.
Alf expressed a wish that the park wouldnt fall into neglect again or
become vandalised because the children of Miles Platting deserve better than
that.
In attendance during the
launch day there was;
The Circus Sensible Troupe who were teaching the children (and one or two adults)
circus skills, face painting, badge making, an Easter egg hunt and a stall selling
drinks, crisps, cakes etc.
A bouncy castle was provided and lots of fun was had by all.
To end the day a variety
of races for the children with prizes for the winner of each race. Thanks go
out to Everyone involved to make the day a success.
