Manchester Environmental Resource Centre initiative

MERCi is an exciting project to set up a Community and Environmental Education Resource Centre in Ancoats. They are refurbishing a building to provide cheap offices for voluntary and community groups, a library, a cafe, a roof garden, an exhibition room and meeting rooms. At the moment MERCi are looking for electricians and plumbers willing to do voluntary work on the project. Workers at MERCi will be offering support, advice and resources to people working locally to improve their communities. They will be working across Manchester and nationally, to help people with similar ideas learn from one another. MERCi hope their centre will be up and running in the winter of 2000 but they are still open to your ideas, suggestions, needs and plans to improve your area and life. They are also very interested in the history of their building, which used to be called Beswick Mill. It is located on the corner of Beswick Street and Spectator Street and used to be a former Lads Club. People at MERCi would love to hear your stories and any information about the past life of this building. If you would like to know more about the project or can help in any way, please give them a ring on 273 1736 or drop a line to: MERCi. 22a Beswick Street, Ancoats.
