The Knocker-up
When my father was on the early shift at the gasworks there was a ran-tan on the window at 5am every morning for a week. This was the knocker-up’s long wooden pole, tapping against the glass. We had a lady knocker-up and she would give us the weather forecast as well as waking my father. You would hear her knocking and calling other workers as she moved on down the street. That cost sixpence a week.
