The Round House

The Round House is just past All Souls Rectory in Every Street, Ancoats. It is no longer standing, apart from a small round wall and eight tombstones. The Round House was part of the Reverend James Schofield’s estate. During the early part of the 1800’s he was a minister of the Society of Bible Christians. Pictured is one of the tombstones belonging to the Schofield family. The year 1835 was a particularly tragic one for the family when Dr. Schofield lost his wife and three of his sons. He also lost his daughter in 1854. Then he and his fourth son died, just one year later.

The tombstones bear some sad inscriptions. Why don’t you go and have a look for yourself? Ancoats is full of history.
