Sport City
What is going on behind those sunflower yellow boards on Alan Turing Way? A whole lot of buildings and facilities are growing there, to be known as Sport City. This will be the centre for ten days of sporting events for the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002.

Sport City will include a floodlit all-weather athletics track, a large sports hall which also doubles as a small events arena, a floodlit all-weather sports pitch, a gymnastics high performance centre, state of the art medical facilities, accomodation and training facilities for the world’s elite sports squads. The Velodrome also counts as part of Sport City. Phew!

Importantly, after the Commonwealth Games, it is hoped that the facilities at Sport City will be used by the public. They will also be available to schools and community groups. And of course, Manchester City Football Club will have their ground there.

Councillor Richard Leese says, “The Stadium and Sport City complex is a very important part of our vision for Manchester as an international city for the 21st Century. This unique area will not only enhance Manchester’s international sporting reputation but will also be important to the regeneration of East Manchester and provide a classic example of sport-led social and community regeneration.” R.S.
