The Lightbowne Saga

With St Jude‘s school closing in July 1999 a history of the school is being written, and we were looking at a couple of old registers. I found that two of my aunties used to go to St Jude‘s, Mary Lightbowne and Jane Lightbowne. As far as I knew, the Lightbownes were all catholics and went to catholic schools, but that was the time we changed over.

About three lines down from my relative Mary Lightbowne was Violet Carson, also known as Ena Sharples, of Coronation Street. That was a surprise!
George Lightbowne.

Violet Carson grew up in German Street, Ancoats (renamed Radium Street during the First World War). Violet was a regular Christmas entertainer at Sharp Street Ragged School, where Serafino di Felice, of the Italian Association, met her and enjoyed her playing. We wonder whether any other readers knew Violet Carson from her Ancoats days. We’d love to hear from you, if so.
