The wonderful Italian walks
In answer to a letter in your last issue from a Mrs Slack. Re - (The Italian walks). This year they are taking place on June 29th starting at 1.30 from St Michaels church George Leigh St. Ancoats, walking through the city centre, and returning a few hours later. The Italian Association was founded in 1888 and the first walk was in 1890.
Anthony Rea's website at www.ancoatslittleitaly.com is well worth visiting for anyone interested in the subject, and there is also an Exhibition on until August at the Museum of Science and Industry, Liverpool Road, Manchester about the same subject FREE Admission.
I used to live in Jersey St and attended St Michael's school, leaving in 1957. I lived in there until getting married in 1968 and my maiden name was Marrochia. My Grandmother Albina sold ice-cream, trading under the name Marocca, and my Dad Tony later made and sold Brown Twist to many of the local Families who sold ice-cream. I have many happy memories of those days.
My family and I still walk in the annual procession and hope to do so for many years to come.
