Manchester's Year of World Sport

2008 is Manchester's Year of World Sport and has been Sportcity's busiest year ever.

In March, Manchester Velodrome was host to the World Track Cycling Championships for the third time. The most prestigious event in World Track Cycling, the event was a fantastic success and saw a series of superb performances from the British Track Cycling Team.

On 14 May, the City of Manchester Stadium was host to the UEFA Cup Final, the culmination of the biggest club football competition in the world. In the final Zenit St. Petersburg beat Glasgow
Rangers 2 - 0.

On 24 May the City of Manchester Stadium welcomed the biggest boxing event ever in the UK with the Homecoming Fight of Rick Hatton. 55,000 people packed the stadium and saw Ricky Hatton eventually beat Mexican fighter Juan Lazcano on points

This summers concerts were the Foo Fighters and Bon Jovi with 59,000 people coming to see Bon Jovi at the City of Manchester Stadium for the second time.

And for the first time the Chinese State Circus was here at Sportcity in June.

And this years great Sportcity events are not finished yet with the new Premier League season starting in August and the World Squash Championships at the National Squash Centre in October.
