Old friends and neighbours
Dear Maggi,
I saw in your Winter 2007 issue letters from my school chums at St. Patrick’s, Livesey Street, Collyhurst, namely Ann Beckett and Margaret Coan.
We did manage to meet up in Manchester. I live in Lincoln and Margaret in Luton. It was fifty-one years since we had seen each other, but the years rolled away as we reminisced about our lives as 13 & 14 year olds. We had a lovely couple of days, and hope to meet up again soon.
We would love some more of the girls to get in touch, particularly Pearl Skinkiss and Rita Campbell, also the twins Patty and Tony Unsworth who I used to travel with to St. Patrick’s on the bus from Moston. Keep up the good work.

Dear Have Your Say Team,
In your last copy of your magazine, issue 26 Winter, on the page of “Your Shout” there was a letter from Brenda Egan (nee Bennett ), Brenda was a friend of my cousin, Iris Elliott (nee Arthington) who lived on tripe colony. I can remember Brenda living in Iron Street and moving to Droylsden, it certainly takes your mind back to your young days. Sadly Iris is no longer with us but I wondered if Brenda would remember us.
Dear Have Your Say,
I have been reading your ‘Love To Hear’ letters in Issue No. 26 and noticed the photograph shown of young men having fun. I was delighted to see my brother Raymond Walsh on the extreme right.
Raymond and his wife Carol lived in Westminster Road, Failsworth and had three sons, Glyn, Stuart and Paul. In 1998 they moved to Bridlington in East Yorkshire.
My dear brother died on 2nd January 2005, he was 59 years old and is so greatly missed.
I would like to say “Thank You Very Much” to Peter Beresford and was wondering if he can recall where the photograph was taken?
Hi Maggi,
Wonder if any of the old ex pupils of Corpus Christi recall a song written by headmaster Henshaw or Henshall called (Good Old Corpus Christi School) it goes back before my time. I was under Mr Phillips, but I think it was before him 1930s or thereabouts it’s just a shot in the dark, some old ex pupil may remember.
Dear All
Could you please try and find a little corner for this letter. It is in the way of an apology to Stanley Pennington, who use to live in Clara Street in the 1930`s/40`s I have no idea where he lives now.
On the open day 4th June 2006 I was introduced to his wife by Margaret Johnson and she was telling me how disappointed he was that I had never mentioned living in Clara Street, I did not remember much about living there as I was only 3 years old when we left to live in Joynson Street. I did go back every week though as my mum`s friend Lizzy Woodruff lived there and as my mum still did her shopping at Ernie Shepherds (no supermarkets then) we would call at number 8, I think it was opposite Stanley`s house. By the way my mother was born at number 25 Clara Street, so I am very fond of the memories of the Street. Please print my E Mail address in case anyone wants to get in touch.
Thank you so much.
Dear Have Your Say
I was Laura Starkie, my Gran & Grandad were Ada & Albert Starkie, they lived at 143 Varley Street until Grandad died. Polly Stocks was my Dad’s auntie and I spent many happy hours at her shop (mentioned issue 25 page 7)
My father started his business in Sandal St and then took over the building in Hiram St., both having been Broughs dairy. I expect the neighbours were very often fed up with the banging and lights from the welding.
I do not know about Gas leaks as I wasn’t around but reading about it brought many happy memories back of my stays down there at my Grans; and also working for my Dad when I was 17. We also had a factory in later years at Sandford Street off Canal Street in Ancoats which Manchester Corporation took off us for one of their so called regenerations – they were responsible for a lot of lost jobs in those areas.
Dear Have Your Say,
Thank you for Have Your Say. As usual I found it most interesting, although the majority of news covers a younger age group to mine.
I was very interested to read the letter from John Morgan as I do remember his family very well. He had a brother Ernest, if my memory serves me well. His mother was one of the neighbours that I used to collect money from, for the Red Cross every Sunday for four years, whilst John and Ernest were in the forces.
His memories were very detailed and informative. I’m sure John would remember my three older Blakebrough brothers, even if he doesn’t remember me. I was the youngest of the family and the only girl.
Dear Have Your Say,
I read your articles over and over again and find them of great interest. Your latest magazine included a letter from Brenda Woodruff, who I remember quite well, but she made a mistake regarding the name Bob Sturdaker, his name was Bobby Stirzaker. He lived in the fish and chip shop opposite the corner shop where I lived. We were good friends and both passed for North Manchester High School. His cousin Kathleen married my cousin, Stanley Griffiths – they had one son (Robert) who now lives in Failsworth.
I would like to know what happened to others who lived in the area, especially Dale Street. Besides Bobby, Eric Hunt and Sylvia Kennedy, there was Kathleen O’Brien and Theresa Walsh who went to Corpus Christi school.
I first attended St. Luke’s school as did Duncan Davidson and Tony Frankland who lived on ‘Tripe Colony’. The name Jean Morton clicked in my mind, she also went to St. Luke’s.
Hi Readers
After picking up issue 26 of Have Your Say at my M.O.T. garage at Foxdenton Lane, and having 4 back issues sent to me I had to join the membership.
My name is David Broadbent I was born at No 3 Lowton Avenue, off Church Lane Moston in December 1944. I went to Lily Lane school until I was 16. When I left school and trained to be an electrician, I am now the maintenance engineer for S.S.L. international at the warehouse on Stakehill Industrial Estate Middleton. (they were called Seton’s at Mumps Oldham) I have been with them for 29 years.
I am also a part-time coach driver for Swan’s travel. I lived in Failsworth for some time with my first wife and my son and daughter, I moved with my son and daughter to Chadderton to be with my present wife and her son and daughter 29/30 years ago.
If anybody remembers me I would like to get in touch.
Hello,
I’ve been given a copy of your magazine. My father Thomas (Tommy) Stanley was born 1928 and went to St. Marks School, Miles Platting. Does anyone remember him? Has anyone any photographs of St Marks School around 1932 +? My father had a brother called George and sisters May and Edi. He lived on Monument Street, then Holland Street then Emmett Street. Does anyone remember him or his family?
I would love to hear from you.
Hi Maggi,
My name is George Hyde. I went to Christ Church School, Harpurhey 1945-55. I then lived off Lathbury Road. Most of my early years were spent in a place called LANKEYS, an area off Rochdale Road. It is now called HARPURHEY PONDS. That was our play area, fishing and swimming in the summer holidays.
All this came to an end when the areas were demolished. Families were re-housed to various parts of Manchester Middleton, Dam Head and Blackley.
I lost touch with many old friends, anyone remember me?
Drop me a line.
Hi,
I have been given your site whilst making enquiry's about my fathers family who was rocking horse/toy maker's in Manchester.
I was wondering if you have any more information or photo's of this rocking horse in prussia park?
I would be grateful if you had any to pass on.
Dear Have Your Say
Whilst I don't think my family lived in the area, I know my husbands family were in Ancoats through the 1800s and probably well into the twentieth century. Whether any of them are still around, I'd love to know. A relative recently presented me with a Prayer Book which belonged to her husbands uncle. It had been given to him by the Rev. Arthur Dale of St. James' (the lesser?) Ancoats in 1898. With the reports of churches closing and being demolished in your issue 25, I wondered if this Church and Rectory still survive?
Dear Maggi,
I just want to let you know that I received my magazine and I also obtained a copy of the book stitched up it's brill and yes my mum is in it on page 51! I want to thank you all and could you put in your next issue whether anyone has any pictures of my mum at Downing Street when she met Tony Blair and also I’d like to hear from anyone who worked at Belle Vue in the 1960s.
Mums name was Anne Gibson and she lived in Greenwood House flats and went to Stanley Grove school. I am so grateful, you don't know how much. My email and number have changed they are as follows; lozzaben@googlemail.com mobile is 07915857799
Dear Have Your Say,
My son and I went to the library one day and my son got chatting to a lady who told my son "Your mum might like to look at Have Your Say Magazine". She went home and brought them back for us at the library! I'd never heard of the magazine till this lady mentioned it, I think it's a fantastic read. Well done. I can see all the hard work that goes into the magazine.
I lived in Armitage Street and went to Armitage St School, Ardwick Infants in the 50s, and then I attended a school called Birley St. School. Think that was Beswick.
I also lived at 125, Hilkirk Street. Is there anyone else who lived in those streets in the 1950s our name was Sheridan I had 5 brothers and 1 sister.
Dear Have Your Say
As a reader of 'Have Your Say' for many months I have looked in vain for a story of Melia's Ltd. 4 Butler Street, next to the Angel Pub it was managed by a nice lady Ethel Stott and assistant called Muriel Ewington age 16 yrs. They were very courteous and could always tell a joke, and be sympathetic in customers time of trouble, which was rife during the war. It soon came obvious that Muriel was a wizard with money, and had customers goods added up before you could say 'Jack Robinson'. Ethel too was a smasher, but always seemed to be off work with tooth abscesses!
They were really good friends, but rumour had it that Muriel was transferred to another branch! WHY! Because she fell in love with a German P.O.W. Ethel could never relate to this, so it spoilt a marvellous friendship.
Years ago, Ethel won a prize at The Hipp, in a go as you please singing competition. This was no surprise to her customers as she was in St. Oswald's Church Choir, and fairly recently I heard she was in St. Cuthbert's choir. I went to see if it was true, but she had left.
Dear all,
The photo (Spring Issue 07) of two miners going down for the last shift at Bradford pit is on its way to Tenerife. My son-in-low, Brian Sanderson worked at many pits in Lancs - Yorks and Derbyshire, including Bradford. He talks about his pit days as though they were yesterday. I'm sure that he would like to hear from any of his ex mates, who are still above ground. I will forward any correspondence, or Brian can be contacted direct at;

Hello Maggi
I am researching my family tree. I came upon your site and I spotted a lady named Lilian Houltram. As my maiden name was Houltram and my father Charles was born in Manchester. I am interested to see whether Harold, Lilian's husband was a member of my family. I have traced my ancestors back as far as 1836 to a William who married Matilda Worral in Manchester Cathedral in1836. I do hope you can help me.
