Hankie and Beaker Survives more than 70 years
Thank you once again for sending me a copy of no. 23, winter 2006, magazine.

Re the letter from Irene O’Neill who attended St Mary’s Road Central School from 1937 until 1940. I too attended this school from 1938 to 1941. That would make Irene a year my senior. With regards to the other St Mary’s School, this was held to the lower half and Central School in the upper part, so I hope that solves problem.

With reference to a previous correspondent regarding souvenirs issued by schools on behalf of Manchester City Councillors, I still have a white and blue handkerchief depicting His Majesty King George the 5th and Her Majesty Queen Mary on the opening of the new library (known as central library) and dated July 17th 1934 also a beaker celebrating their silver jubilee, May 6th 1935.

These were issued whilst I was a pupil at Hague Street School Newton Heath.

I become nostalgic thinking back to the earlier days. We all received an excellent education and went on to achieve good careers. There were schools appropriate for high achievers, i.e. technical colleges, trade schools and colleges or evening classes for commercial candidates.

My best wishes to you all for 2007.
Mrs Kathleen Bradshaw
