at the Manchester
Food & Drink Festival
Thought you might be interested to hear about the busy time that was had courtesy of the recipe book at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival.
You will have seen in previous editions of the magazine about the local recipe book 'Manchester Tart and other Recipes'. The interest that has been generated by the book has meant that we had a great opportunity to promote it, with some really great events and link our area to the City Wide festival, which is held every October.
First up was a cook and taste event in Ancoats. The women who had contributed the recipes to the cookbook came out in force to share recipes and cooking tips. We all had a great time and then took the finished dishes- hot pot, Manchester tart and apple pies, down to the Manchester Food & Drink Festival Marquee in Albert square to give the festival-goers a taste of proper Ancoats cooking. Needless to say, although we had spent the morning cooking, the finished results all disappeared in 5 minutes!
The second big event for the cook book-ers was the Manchester Tart competition. The winner was Jenny Osborne. The competition was judged by Phil Jones the head of the Food and Drink Festival; Eycke Zimmer the chef at the Lowry Hotel (fresh from winning UK chef of the Year!) and our own Beverley Hesketh, who had contributed the Manchester Tart recipe to the cook book.
The entries were very creative and ranged from a very healthy version, to a tart made with local ale! The delicious wining tart combined blueberries and plums (representing the colours of the two football teams of Manchester!) in sweet pastry with custard topping. It certainly was tasty. (recipe right, if you want to try it yourself).
Sales of the recipe book are continuing to go well and raise money for the magazine, which is great news. Don't forget to get yours as stocking fillers for Christmas!!
