Sportcity

Four years after the Commonwealth Games Sportcity continues to grow as a world-class sports and events venue and as a new heart for the communities of East Manchester. With over 4.5 million visits, Sportcity is one of the most successful sport and events venues in the country. Sportcity's continuing success attracts visits from cities and organisations all over the world to look at post games legacy and our experience of continuing to develop both to meet the needs of elite athletes and Manchester's communities.
Manchester City Council and the Sportcity partners actively work together to develop an extensive and varied programme of events throughout the year. Some of our biggest events include Premier League Football, concerts, the AAA's Championships, the Paralympic World Cup, the National Badminton Championships, the National Squash Championships, the British Squash Open, LTA $15,000 Tennis Competition and the National Track Cycling Championships.
Where the Games Begin
Sportcity is the home of:
The City of Manchester Stadium the home of Manchester City Football Club. This 48,000 seat stadium hosts premier league football and many other events through the year including concerts.
The Manchester Regional Arena. This 6,000 seat outdoor Arena has facilities for all athletics events and is used by Manchester City for their reserve team games. Manchester's athletics development programme has a wide-ranging programme to encourage community use and many Manchester Schools use the venue for their Sports Day.
The National Squash Centre is the home of England Squash and regularly hosts the biggest squash competitions in the UK as well as being available for community use.
The English Institute of Sport provides athletes with advice on improving performance and recovery from injuries.
The Isospa Fitness Studio, Health Suite and Workout Studio is a community health and fitness facility.
The Manchester Velodrome is the National Cycling Centre, Britain's primary indoor Olympic cycle track and widely regarded as one of the World's finest and fastest board tracks.
The Regional Tennis Centre has six indoor and six outdoor hard courts and has an extensive programme of community use including a tennis development programme.
The Heart of East Manchester
The development of Sportcity is an important element in the regeneration of East Manchester lead by New East Manchester. This regeneration work continues but already new life has been breathed in to over 2,000 hectares of the city, over 500,000 square feet of new business space completed, 3,000 jobs created or safeguarded and 3,500 new homes built.
Sportcity has successfully developed a world-class sports and events venue providing facilities for elite and professional athletes as well as developing a strong community programme. The site has returned to active economic use many acres of previously derelict land, provided for major environmental improvements and created new employment and other opportunities for local people. This work continues with the development of Sportcity including our bid to develop a Regional Casino with further sports facilities, hotel accommodation, offices and a learning centre. Sportcity is being developed as a new district centre for East Manchester and our commercial partners ASDA Wal-Mart, Next, Countryside Properties and Mercedes are equally important to the success of this project.
