Biodiesel is an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel made from vegetable oil. It is a largely renewable fuel and, is made locally from from used cooking oil, produces up to 90% less carbon dioxide than diesel. Biodiesel is cheaper than diesel, gives you more miles per gallon and, contrary to popular belief, you don't need to convert your vehicle to use it.
This fuel has been widely available in France and Germany for many years but not in the UK. A group of environmentally conscious individuals in Manchester got so tired of waiting for someone else to sell biodiesel that they set up their own bulk buying club called Manchester Biodiesel Cooperative. Now four years down the line with the help of the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund they have opened their own filling station: Green Gold Biodiesel, just yards from Piccadilly train station. It is the first forecourt in Manchester to sell biodiesel and the first dedicated biodiesel garage in the country.
Using biodiesel hugely reduces the environmental impact of your vehicle at a stroke. Diesels can run on between 5% and 50% biodiesel depending on age and engine type. It's use does not even need to affect your warranty. Several local businesses including Emerge Recycling, Manchester Community Transport, Ring and Ride and Manchester Van Hire use the fuel and Manchester City Council have taken the pioneering move of running their entire fleet on 5% biodiesel and their Fords on 20%.
Green Gold sell both 'Basic 5' (5% Biodiesel: 95% Diesel) available to everyone and 'Pure 100' (100% Biodiesel) available exclusively to our members and cheaper than supermarket diesel. Membership is just £10 per year for individuals.
The garage staff are always happy to discuss your use of biodiesel in your vehicle with you. The shop also sells a wide range of fair trade and organic snacks and drinks, environmentally friendly household products and useful jerry cans and funnels for when you are away from Manchester and can't access biodiesel conveniently at a pump.

Manchester Biodiesel Cooperative exists to reduce climate change gas emissions in Manchester by encouraging the use of biodiesel. We would like volunteers for a variety of jobs within the organisation.
Tasks include doing research on the effectiveness of marketing materials, staffing stalls, research for funding bids, research of manufacturer's advice on biodiesel, painting, leafleting and creating art from used car parts. All volunteers must be prepared to send some time staffing our forecourt. Your role within the organisation can be as varied and rewarding as you wish to make it. Biodiesel has proved it's reliability over many years in France and Germany but it is relatively new to the UK. We are working hard to get the word out in Manchester.
