The Mission years
My maiden name was Griffiths, I was born at 15 Lowe Street, Miles Platting in 1934. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the Griffiths family. Joe and Lucy were mam and dad, they had five children-Joe, Doris, Sydney, Arthur and Lily (me).

We all went to Nelson Street School. At the time I was there Mr. Chadwick was the headmaster. Mr. Worwick assistant head and maths teacher, Miss Barlow was the music and art teacher and Miss Schofield in the infants.

My best friend was Joyce Sermon who I haven’t seen for – it must be nearly 60years.
In 1939 my brothers Syd, Arthur and myself were evacuated to Tissington in Derbyshire, a beautiful little village. In August last year I spent a lovely weekend there, staying at the farmhouse where we lived in 1939. It is still a working farm but also a B&B. The village is just as it was in 1939!

When I was three years old I used to go to Miles Platting Mission Sunday School on Oldham Road. In 1956, I married Harold Houltram; a member of the Mission and a Cornet player in the Mission Band. We went to live at Walkden, but we still went to the Mission every Sunday and Band rehearsal Wednesday nights’, because by then I had joined the band too.
Miles Platting means a lot to me and Miles Platting Mission was the centre of mine and Harolds life. Unfortunately Harold died in 2002-we had been married 47 years.

I still travel to Miles Platting in the football season, being a Manchester City Fan and a season ticket holder.

Keep up the good work on the magazine-I really do enjoy reading it.
Incidentally I came to one of your open days, but didn’t see anyone who knew me, but I really enjoyed myself.

Lillian Houltram
