What a great website! My 89yr old mother and I have forgotten who used to say “It’s agony Ivy!” Can anyone oblige? I am a child of the late ‘50’s with very fond memories of the performances that Fred Fielder mentions, and take great pleasure in airing them again at our Hospital Radio Station, where most listeners are ‘of a certain age.’
Many thanks for a great magazine – the stories refresh the memory and the good old times come flooding back.
One thing myself and other readers have noticed is that there has been no mention of that great school situated in Monsall Street, St. Edmunds?
The education was a bit limited but we did enjoy ourselves.
Memories please 1935-1950.
I would like to know if anyone remembers my late father. He was called Edward Arthur Whiteley. He was one of four brothers and one sister. Their names were John, Bernard, Wilfred and Winfred. He was born in 1914 and lived in George Leigh Street. Their father,
Arthur Whiteley, was the local undertaker and had business premises nearby.
My father attended St Michael’s School and was an altar boy at St Michael’s church. He married Margaret Dalton and they later moved to Wythenshawe.
My parents are both now deceased but it would be nice to hear from anyone who remembered them.
My wife , Jean Kershaw, came from Miles Platting and here are some details of her early life there. She lived at 9, Lowe Street and she attended Nelson St School. The people next door were called Wilson.
Jean's father played with the Top Hat Band and they accompanied St John's in the Whit Walks in the 1920 to 1930 period. Her brother Sidney also went to Nelson St School.
Her uncle, John Mitchell, was a local shoe cobbler on Oldham Rd between Varley St and Nelson St. Her grandfather, E.T.Kershaw was a confectioner. His shop and bakery was on Church St, Newton Heath.
If anyone remembers her will they please get in touch?
Yours sincerely
I came across this old school photo-or should I say half a photo! Taken at Nelson Street School in 1945. At present I cannot find the rest of it and I was wondering if it is possible one of my old class mates happens to have the complete photo.
I am on the left second row down, one or two others I remember. Sam Callan, George Grainger and ? Ferguson Ned Kelly and Alfie Foulkes. Among the girls; Hilda Jones, Hilda? Radcliffe and ? Bowker.
By ‘eck’ it’s hard trying to remember names after all these years!
