Do you remember St. Marks?
I remember when I was in the last year of St Mark’s primary school in 1980-81. The headmaster at the time was retiring, his name was Mr Shaw. He paid for us all to go to Chester Zoo and gave us two pounds each for spending money. As a surprise for his last assembly, we learned some old songs to sing to him. One of them was ‘On Mother Kelly’s Doorstep’, and some old Irish navvie songs.

Memories & old photos. Can you tell us when they were taken?

Mrs Mac, a dinner lady, used to wear big sheepskin mittens. She was always rubbing her hands together when she was in the playground. She used to give the kids mints.

When I was in the infants at St Mark’s, I used to wear little red boots. I used to tap dance in them, in front of the class. If you’d been good in the morning, you could have your dinner in the Wendy House. We used to have a red and white checked tablecloth. I used to love it!

I was 7 years old and going to the ‘old’ St Mark’s primary school. My mum had gone into labour with my younger sister Donna. It was 1966. My Dad was left with the job of getting five children ready for school. He was in such a rush and was very flustered, as you can imagine. I tried to tell him that he had fogotten to give me some knickers to put on but every time I said, “Dad, I’ve got...” he would say, “Hurry up, you’re going to be late!”

I spent the day pulling my dress down and feeling very embarrassed. All my friends were playing donkey rides and I had to pretend I did not want to play.
