Between March 1987 to April 1989, I worked for a company
called Kingley & Forrester plc, based in Chadderton, near Oldham. Whilst employed
at this company, a group of us were sent to Victoria Mill during the months leading
up to Christmas. The company had toys stored at the mill, so we had to get the
toy orders ready for the Christmas deliveries. The company rented three floors,
where the toys were stored and the rest of the mill was like an empty shell. We
got to the mill at 10am and when we got the orders together, we had to wait for
the vans to arrive to take us back to Chadderton. During my last year with the
company, the lease on the mill came to an end, so we had to transfer the remaining
toys back to the main warehouse in Chadderton.
In 1996 I decided to take some part time courses at
the local adult education centre which is now based in Victoria Mill. I cant
believe the transformation that has taken place since the last time I was here.
The mill is now split into two parts. One part has been arranged into flats,
designed for people who earn lots of money. I say that because I cant
afford the monthly rent! The second part of the mill is where the adult education
centre is situated. The way the work has been done is very good indeed.
