Miles Platting boys

I lived at 58 Rhodes St. Miles Platting opposite the wash baths, until 1952. I went to St. Luke’s school for my education until I left at the age of fifteen. I spent some happy times with the church lad’s brigade and also with the choir in St. Luke’s church.

Bernard Shaw was the organist and when he wasn’t playing the organ he had a dance band. He used to play once a month in the school hall. It was half a crown to go in and worth every penny.

I have enclosed a photograph of my father Jack and his brothers and nephews, who I am sure some of your readers will remember. There were two other brothers Albert and Tom who sold poultry at Shudehill market. They all lived in Dale Street and the George pub was their local.

I well remember my mother sending me for hot ribs and cabbage every Tuesday to a little shop on Albion Street, where you’d take your basin and paid 6d. My uncle George had the green grocers shop on Albion Street. His sister Emma had the egg shop on Butler Street, next door to Sumners the undertakers.
