A taste of young people’s workshops
Samantha
Me and the others from the AMP project went to a workshop at Harpurhey with the people from Have Your Say. We had a talk about where we live, what it is like, how we think things will be when we are older, what we think of older people, what we think life is like for them, what was it like when they were young and loads of other things.
Then they gave us some written questions and let us work on the computers. We had to try to answer the questions truthfully.
This is what I wrote:
Life is good for me, living in Ancoats, because I know most people that live there. (family, friends)
I think my life will have changed a lot by the time I grow up. I will probably have a job.
Grandmas and granddads are very important. My grand-parent’s life is a little easier since they have retired.
I know lots of older people who live near me and I get on well with them because they don’t moan a lot.
I think their lives would have been a bit boring because they were quite poor and wouldn’t have been able to do as many exciting things that young people can do nowadays.
I enjoyed doing this because I like typing on computers I liked having a chat as well.

We were asked questions about older people, about what we thought of them and what we thought their life was like years ago and what we think their life is like now.
I feel sorry for old people because when they are old they find it harder to walk and when they were young they didn’t have thing that we have like mobile phones or computers.
We were given a camera each and told to take some photographs during the week of older people mostly, and we were told to bring the cameras back the next week and Stella, Kath or Jim would get them developed. We were told we must ask the person whose photo we want to take for permission to do it.
I didn’t take one of the throw away cameras because we’ve got a digital camera at home so I wanted to use that. I took some photos and I found it easy. Most people didn’t mind me taking their photo. I think they look good.
Another day we practised interviewing. We each recorded Jim Stella and Kath on a minidisk player then we listened to the interviews.
I interviewed Jim.
I asked him questions about his personal life as a child.
I got bored because the interviews went on for too long.

Living in Ancoats is good because there’s projects like Have Your Say that we can join in with.
There will be a lot of changes when I am older, I will have a job and I will be doing something with my life.
Grandparents are really important and their lives are great I think.
I took some photos. I enjoyed it.
I get on fine with older people, I always say hiya to them.
Me, Sam and Aimee went to the open day at Have Your Say, we took photos and interviewed some of the people, we met the Lord Mayor, I did a little interview with him. He was nice and told me some funny things.
