now&then project
Have Your Say, in partnership with Discus, are working with young people in our neighbourhood. The aim of the project is to close the divide between young and old and collect their views about our locality.
About me & Miles Platting
My name is Mark I am 16 yrs old and I have lived in Miles Platting all my life.
Over the years Miles Platting has had quite a few make over’s, I think it has got a lot better with things like our club, the council planting plants, helping old people do their houses up with things like new fences, new doors & new windows.
There is a very good thing close to Miles Platting that makes the area better and that is Sportcity, it has some very good facilities like a gym with loads of apparatus, squash centre, tennis centre, running and cycling tracks and the City of Manchester Stadium.
Older generation
I think the younger generation should be treating the old people better and do things like cutting their gardens if the grass is too long and if there’s rubbish in their gardens helping to clean it up.
That’s why we shouldn’t need to have wardens because in the old days some of the young people would do it for them.
My name is Gemma I am 14 yrs old and I live in Miles Platting, I’ve lived there all my life.
I think Miles Platting has got miles better in the last few years but there is still not enough for us young people to do especially for the girls and I would like to see more things for the younger generation.
We have nowhere to play on our bikes as they knocked the bmx course down that we used to have in the area.
There is not a lot for the girls to do e.g. dance classes, or things for girls to do in the youth club. I think if we had more facilities and entertainment, then the young people would not get in to trouble as much.
I think that the older people are nice and that they need more facilities and more help because they do not get looked after properly, they are scared sometimes to go to the shops because the young people hang around in gangs, because they have nothing to do.
Our names are Natalie & Jade. We are both 16 years old we live in Miles Platting, where we feel it has gone much better recently, most of the young people go to the library, youth clubs, local parks, swimming baths or just hang out on streets; the main things we would like to see change in Miles Platting is more activities for the girls with youth workers, e.g. trips. We would also like more things to do during the day time.
We feel sorry for the older generation as they are sometimes scared to come out whilst us children are on the streets but we also think this is unnecessary as they shouldn’t feel scared in their own area, we don’t dislike them we just think that some of them moan a bit too much.
We have looked and read about Miles Platting back in days gone by, in books and leaflets at our local library. All around Miles Platting has been changed a lot and we think it’s been changed for the better but could still do with a little bit more. As well as the places we’ve mentioned that people can go to, quite near to where we live are the tennis centre, stadium and velodrome.
