1930s Whitsuntide
suited and bootedA time that sticks in the memory from the 30’s was Whitsun. It was the only time in the year that we in our family, and I’m sure in most families in those days, were bought new suits and boots. My father would take my brothers and myself to a shop in Butler Street called Ben Hartley’s. We went there because you could buy all the clothes on ‘tick’. We would wear our new suits during
Whit week and every Sunday after that.

On Monday, mother would put all the suits into the pawnshop, and on the following Friday would redeem them again! My father never knew anything about that, thank goodness!
