30’s and 40’s Back Packing
When we who were born in the 1930’s; got to the age of six or seven we would pack our jam or dripping butties and a bottle of water and trek as far as the Clay Hills, First Fields, Philips Park and Tripe Colony. As we got older trekking with our ’back packs’ took us further afield. In fact we started trekking ‘abroad’ as far as places like Midget Forest, Ten Arches, The Dingle, Daddy Naylor’s and Bunkers Hill, until we got (as far as we were concerned) to the other side of the World, ‘Daisy Nook’. That in fact was only the easterly direction. Our trekking to the West started off on Cambrian Street red rec’ and took us to Holt Town, The Don, New-Izzy baths, Cats Park, Prussia Park and of course abroad again to Little Italy. As you can imagine we must have got through quite a lot of jam and dripping butties, and bottles of water with all that trekking. I’m sure we all enjoyed every minute of it; so to all you old back packers, keep trekking!
