If you look at the Coat of Arms for the City of Manchester,
you will notice a shield which is the centre piece supported by an Antelope and
a Lion each with a rose on its shoulder taken from the royal badge of King Henry
IV Duke of Lancaster.
On the shield are three lines, those lines represent the three rivers, Irwell,
Medlock and Irk, which merged and where Manchester originated. Above the shield
is a ship in full sail, indicating commercial enterprise. At the top is a terrestrial
globe representing all parts of the world to which the manufactured goods of the
district are exported. The globe is bearing a number of bees, emblematic of industry
which has distinguished Manchester and raised it to its present importance.
The Motto at the bottom of the Coat of Arms is Concilio
et Labore which translated means By Counsel and Work.
