The 4th Annual Townley Quiz

Members of Have Your Say magazine were invited to put in a team at the Annual Quiz Night held in March at the Townley Public house on Albert Street, Beswick. Have Your Say were keen to be involved and the chosen team were brushing up on their general knowledge sport, music etc.

Unfortunately the week of the quiz saw a spate of illness among the Have Your Say members, (could it have been nerves?) so three new members had to be drafted in.

We started off really well, due to the skill one of the newer members who carried the team through the General Knowledge round. We had the good sense to play the joker in this round so enabling us to win double points. That took us into the lead, however our triumph was short lived! The other rounds weren’t so good despite trying to listen in on other teams’ conversations. I’m not sure where in the order we came but I think it may have been last! There was the usual banter amongst teams and a bit of heckling towards question master Steve Green from Peterchurch Tenants Association Openshaw which all added to the fun of the night.

This event has become very popular as it’s a good way of getting together and catching up with all the different groups and staff involved in New Deal projects in a purely social setting.

This year there was also a quick Fact or Fib quiz, participants could pay 50p to enter, the proceeds of which were being donated to Have Your Say Magazine funds and thanks to their generosity £25 was raised.

Winners of the Townley quiz were “Terry’s Allsorts” who also generously donated £15 to our funds out of their winnings.

It’s a good job we weren’t relying on our skill in the quiz to bring any money in because we’d have been sorely disappointed. How many times have we heard the phrase? “It’s not the winning, but the taking part that counts”. B*** ***t but I think we proved that it is still possible to have a good time even if we were last. Let’s face it somebody has to be!
