Early Days

I was born in nineteen forty two
And here are a few lines to share with you
When I was five I went to school
So I could learn and be no fool
Six weeks holiday, now that was the best
They used to call it teachers rest
But at home you were mother’s pest
Out of the house jam butty in hand
These are the days, this is grand
We used to play football in the park
We would stay there ‘til it was nearly dark
In those days I was a Dandy fan
To see the antics of Desperate Dan
Then there was good-old Keyhole Kate
Now that girl was really great
We used to play a game called Kick-can
Somebody kicked it and then we all ran
Just a word I’d like to say
I thought May the 1st. a very good day
An old long frock and a bit of Blackin’
We looked like something out of uncle Tom’s cabin
Knocking on doors and kicking up a row
“Here’s a halfpenny, be off with you now”
Saturday afternoon now there was a treat
You could hardly keep still in your seat
Mighty Mouse, Hopalong, Serial as well
Those Saturday afternoons were really swell
When it was over and out in the sun
You’d be hopalong horse and smack your own bum!
Holidays now over and back into school
If I said they weren’t the best days I would be a fool
When I was fifteen I left school to earn some money
Now I know life can be hard but sometimes funny

Mr. N Jones.
