England and St George

On the morning of Saturday 20th April, in the New Cross area of Ancoats there was a determined attempt to celebrate the occasion of the feast day of our Patron Saint. So, what if the actual day isn’t until the 23rd? That being a Tuesday this year, many people are at work so the 20th was chosen as the closest to it.

The time, effort, and energy put in by a lady called Thelma McGrail not only in organising the event, but also the pre-event functions and raffles etc, to raise money to kick-start things aided by her friend Heather at the Cheshire Cheese Public House, resulted in this Community Street Festival.

The closure of George Leigh Street, Sherratt Street and Bengal Street was necessary to accommodate the attractions for the youngsters, two Bouncy-Castles, Bucking Bronco, Dodgems, Organised Races and the Boys and Girls Brigade Band from St Cuthbert’s Church. Flags and bunting were the order of the day, where a multitude of people of all ages were gathering and the event began to take on a Carnival atmosphere, even some adults tried to ride the “Bucking Bronco”. (you can’t touch ‘em for it!).

For years letters in the newspapers have complained about the lack of enthusiasm to celebrate “Saint George’s Day,” perhaps Thelma may have finally broken the ice, and maybe some practical support for her to organise a bigger and better festival in future years could very well materialise? (are you taking note Council?)
Well done Thelma, your efforts proved a success!
