The News

When I was younger, I used to hate having to watch the news on TV. To me, news programmes were boring and went on too long, though they were only on for ten minutes. But as I get older, I enjoy seeing what goes on in the world.

A few years ago, the heads of television decided to extend the news programmes to half an hour. I wondered at first, how they would fill the half hour, but I needn’t have worried!

Now, the questions I ask myself are these:
Am I broadening my horizons or getting nosier in my old age?
Am I more interested in the world, or less interested in my own surroundings?
Have I got more compassion, or am I hardened to other people’s suffering that I see daily on TV? And was it self-preservation when I was younger, because I wouldn’t have been able to cope with the awful realities of life?
